The populist mayor, Han Kou-yu, was picked to run against President Tsai Ing-wen. Han, the mayor of southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung, beats Terry Kou, Taiwan’s richest man, the founder of the world’s largest iPhone assembler Foxconn in the KMT primary.
The newly selected KMT presidential candidate favors closer ties with Beijing. On the other hand President Tsai, who has been sharply critical of Beijing’s attempts to pressure Taiwan into unification, just visited New York. Her speech during the visit underlined the warmest ties between Washington and Taipei in two decades. Voters will have to decide in next January’s election between governments leaning toward Washington or Beijing.
